Australia’s cricket team gained an early advantage in their ODI series against Zimbabwe, winning the first match by 59 runs. This victory, marked by Matt Renshaw’s first ODI century, sets a positive tone for the Aussies ahead of the remaining two matches in Harare.

Electing to bat first, Australia posted a formidable score of 294-8 in their allotted 50 overs. Renshaw shone with an impressive 109, forming crucial partnerships with Alex Carey and Ollie Peake, which bolstered the team’s total. Despite a standout bowling performance from Zimbabwe’s Newman Nyamhuri, who claimed 5 wickets for 62 runs, Australia managed to maintain a competitive edge.

Zimbabwe’s innings saw a glimmer of hope through a significant 98-run partnership between Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza, following a shaky start with four early wickets down. Ervine contributed a solid 59 runs before being dismissed by Nathan Ellis, who returned to the attack effectively. Raza’s effort of 57 was halted by Spencer Johnson, as Zimbabwe’s chase began to falter.

Nathan Ellis emerged as a key player for Australia, finishing with remarkable figures of 5-31 from 9.1 overs, efficiently dismantling Zimbabwe’s lower order. His efforts ensured Australia remained in control, bowling out Zimbabwe for 235 in just over 45 overs.

With the series opener concluded, the teams will reconvene for the second ODI on Friday in Harare, followed by the third match on Sunday. Australia will be looking to capitalize on their early lead, while Zimbabwe will aim to bounce back and level the series.
