Christopher Nolan’s latest cinematic endeavor, The Odyssey, has made a significant impact at the global box office, amassing $264 million during its debut weekend. This remarkable opening surpasses the initial earnings of Nolan’s previous hit, Oppenheimer, released in 2023. The film, starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, brings to life Homer’s ancient Greek epic, chronicling the perilous 10-year journey of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he returns home following the Trojan War.
With a production budget of $250 million, The Odyssey represents Nolan’s most successful opening outside of the Batman series and marks his strongest box-office debut since The Dark Knight Rises premiered in 2012. In North America alone, the film garnered $124.5 million, securing its place as the third-largest opening of the year, trailing only behind Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Despite its R rating, the movie attracted a broad audience, particularly appealing to viewers aged 18 to 34.
Internationally, the United Kingdom and Ireland emerged as key contributors to the film’s success, generating £12.9 million over its first three days. Notably, The Odyssey is the first feature film to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras, offering sharper and higher-resolution visuals. It launched in over 12,800 locations and was shown on 26,000 screens globally, including 440 IMAX screens.
The film has received widespread critical acclaim, showcasing an ensemble cast that includes Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, and Charlize Theron. Nolan, who is known for his meticulous filmmaking, has suggested that it might be at least three years before he directs another project, citing the scale and challenges involved in bringing The Odyssey to life.
